We’ve added another installment of Silt Studio’s sold out People’s Cup work shop!

The People’s Cup is a community-engaged project by Jay Kimball at SILT Studio.

Each porcelain cup is hand-thrown and treated with a layer of black slip. You decorate the cup using “sgraffito,” a technique where you scratch through the slip-covered surface to reveal the clay body beneath.

You can use anything as a tool: a pencil, a pen, a pottery tool, a chopstick, or whatever else you’d like.

The black slip will remain black and the cup itself (and the lines, patterns, or texture you create through the slip) will transform into a delicate white upon firing.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Jay Kimball is an artist living on Treaty 4 Territory in Swift Current. He reflects on the roles of land and community in the handmade as he creates work that ranges between pragmatic objects, sculptural earthworks, and community-focused practice. 

Kimball was raised on a farm near Rockglen, SK and studied at the University of Regina. Through his art, he continues the homegrown values of labour, team work, and resourcefulness. His curiosity about how place and memory intertwine drives him to create artworks imbued with natural materials and storytelling. Kimball’s work is found in public and private collections nationally and internationally.
